How Often Should You Detail Your Car? A Southeast Melbourne Guide

Christopher Vincenzo Perrotta·8 April 2026·5 min read

One of the most common questions I hear from clients across Berwick, Cranbourne, Narre Warren, and Pakenham is simple: "How often should I get my car detailed?" The answer depends on several factors — your driving habits, where you park, your vehicle's colour, and the specific environmental challenges of Melbourne's southeast.

The Baseline: Every 3-4 Months for Most Drivers

For the average daily driver in Melbourne's southeast, a professional detail every three to four months provides solid maintenance protection. This schedule aligns roughly with the seasons, allowing you to address the specific contaminants each period brings.

However, this is a baseline — not a rule. Some vehicles need more frequent attention, while others can stretch to six months between professional details if they're garaged and driven infrequently.

Seasonal Detailing Calendar for Southeast Melbourne

Spring (September — November) Spring is the most aggressive season for your vehicle's paintwork in the southeast. The Dandenong Ranges and local gardens explode with pollen, coating every horizontal surface in a fine yellow-green dust. This pollen isn't just unsightly — it contains acids that can etch into clear coats if left for extended periods, particularly when combined with morning dew.

A professional detail at the start of spring removes winter's accumulated grime and applies protection for the pollen season ahead. If you park under trees, consider a mid-spring maintenance wash as well.

Summer (December — February) Melbourne's UV index regularly hits 11-14 during summer, making it one of the most UV-intense cities in the world. Unprotected paint oxidises and fades under this radiation. Summer also brings insect residue from evening drives and tar spots from softened road surfaces.

A detail at the start of summer should focus on UV protection — either a quality sealant or ceramic coating top-up. Pay special attention to horizontal panels (bonnet, roof, boot lid) that receive the most direct UV exposure.

Autumn (March — May) Autumn brings falling leaves, increased moisture, and the first cold mornings. Leaves that settle on your vehicle and become wet create tannin stains that can be difficult to remove if left too long. The increased rainfall washes contaminants across your paint, and morning dew combined with overnight temperatures creates conditions for water spot formation.

An autumn detail should include a thorough decontamination to remove summer's accumulated tar, insect residue, and any early leaf staining.

Winter (June — August) Winter in Melbourne's southeast is characterised by cold mornings, frequent rain, and reduced UV. While the UV threat diminishes, the constant moisture and road spray from wet roads deposit a film of grime, brake dust, and road salt (particularly if you drive on treated freeway surfaces) that gradually degrades your paint's protection.

A winter detail focuses on maintaining the protective layer applied in autumn and addressing any water spots or mineral deposits from hard water.

Factors That Increase Frequency

Dark-coloured vehicles show contamination and swirl marks more readily. If you drive a black, dark blue, or dark grey vehicle, you'll notice the effects of environmental damage sooner and may want to detail every two to three months.

Vehicles parked outdoors without garage protection face constant exposure to UV, rain, pollen, bird droppings, and tree sap. Outdoor-parked vehicles benefit from monthly maintenance washes between quarterly professional details.

Families with children and pets should consider interior detailing every two to three months. Crumbs, spills, pet hair, and general wear accumulate quickly in family vehicles.

Highway commuters on the Princes Freeway or Monash Freeway accumulate road film, brake dust, and stone chips at an accelerated rate. If you're doing 40,000+ kilometres per year, quarterly detailing is the minimum.

The CommandaPro Recommendation

For most southeast Melbourne drivers, here's what I recommend:

A Full Service Detail twice per year — once in spring and once in autumn — to provide comprehensive restoration and protection. Between those major details, a Deluxe Detail every quarter keeps your vehicle maintained and protected.

If you've invested in a Ceramic Coating, your maintenance schedule becomes simpler. A professional maintenance wash every three to four months is sufficient to keep the coating performing at its best, with an annual inspection and top-up to extend its lifespan.

The key is consistency. Regular professional detailing doesn't just keep your car looking good — it preserves your paint, protects your interior materials, and maintains your vehicle's resale value.
